Some girls have a habit of biting and chewing off their nails. Not only is the habit nasty, because of the involvement of saliva and all that, it also has dangerous health repercussions. Here are 5 dangerous consequences of nail-biting:

1- Our fingertips harbor several different types of bacteria, fungus, and yeast. Different types of germs feature on our fingertips, because of the many different activities we involve our hands in daily. Staphlococcus aureus is a germ which is very prevalent under our nails and it can cause several different kinds of skin infections like boils and abscesses.

2- According to buzz feed, back in 2007, Turkish scientists tested 59 people to see whether nail biting had any real effect on transporting bacteria to the mouth. They swabbed each person’s mouth for saliva to check for diarrhoea and vomiting bacteria such as Escherichia coli and many other nasties starting with E. And guess what? Seventy-six per cent of those who bit their nails tested positive, compared to just 26.5% of non-biters.

3-It causes dental damage. Nail biting destroys the teeth and gums. In extreme cases people have lost teeth and displaced jaws over nail biting.

4- A report found out that nail biters are exposed to halitosis(highly disgusting/bad breath). Our mouths contain plenty of bacteria, which are supposed to be there to aid in digestion and other processes which take place in the mouth, so if one keeps sticking fingers into the mouth they are introducing tons of germs into the mouth too which would interact with the bacteria to produce bad breath.

5- According to buzz feed: "Nail biting and picking at the skin around the nail often go hand-in-hand. And while that might feel like a great way to while away the time, having acute infective paronychia isn’t. It’s caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria getting into small, open sores, and results in pools of pus forming around the nail. Basically, it’s like finger herpes, which is actually caused by the cold sore virus. It can be cured by pills, but sometimes it has to be surgically drained."

So Beta Girl, if you are reading this and you are a nail biter, this is your cue to stop.
